Bungalow conversion plans spark ‘over development’ concerns for Southwell councillors
Plans to extend and modernise a bungalow have been described as ‘inappropriate’ by town councillors.
Southwell Town Council’s planning and highways committee considered an application for Greenfields, The Holme.
Concerns were raised about the suitability of the development for the area, and the scale of the expansion proposed.
Plans for the bungalow would see a conservatory removed and a large, modern, flat-roofed rear extension built to house an open plan kitchen, dining, and living space.
The home would also be developed upwards into the roof space, to form two dormer bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms.
The Holme is a small rural road off Westhorpe, with a number of homes on neighbouring plots, and Greenfields’ rear garden backs onto another property.
At the committee’s meeting on Wednesday, August 6, councillors raised concerns about the rear extension encroaching towards this property.
Roger Blaney suggested the larger footprint could be considered ‘over development’ of the plot, while Malcolm Brock described the plans as ‘intrusive and incongruous’.
Mr Brock said the plan itself ‘had its merits’ but that it was not appropriate for the setting as it was a ‘very significant transformation of the site’.
It was agreed for the council to lodge an objection to the application.
An objection has also been submitted to the planning portal by a neighbour, who raised concerns about a loss of daylight amenity to their property, the ‘negative overbearing impact of the development upon the conversation area Westhorpe’, and the choice of materials.
A decision will be made at a later date by Newark and Sherwood District Council.
