Newark MP Robert Jenrick calls for postponement in 1.25% National Insurance hike

The recently-approved National Insurance tax hike could see Newark residents' disposal incomes slashed by 10%.

Newark MP Robert Jenrick made the stark comment on social media and called for a postponement to the 1.25% tax increase.

Despite voting for the rise in September last year, Mr Jenrick said the pockets of hard-working families would come under siege as the tax kicked in.

He also requested an increase in domestic energy output — using oil and gas from home turf.

"The pockets of hard-working families will come under siege as the National Insurance (NI) rise kicks in, town halls threaten rises in council tax, and energy bills soar," wrote Mr Jenrick.

"For an average constituent in Newark, the cumulative impact is akin to a 10% cut in disposable income.

"It is right to postpone the National Insurance hike and to increase domestic energy output, utilising the oil and gas that our islands have been blessed with, which is not inconsistent with our net zero commitment."
