Police are hunting a thug who attacked an 89-year-old woman in her own home.

The woman, who has asked not to be named, was left with serious facial injuries.

Nottinghamshire Police released a picture showing her injuries. They described it as a shocking incident.

It is believed the man got in through a window at her house in The Platts, Newark. He was confronted by the victim and demanded money.

When she refused he grabbed her handbag. The woman was injured as she tried to stop him getting away. The victim’s cries were heard by neighbours.

Inspector Louise Clarke, of Newark Police, said: “This was a shocking incident against a vulnerable 89-year-old victim.

“The police fully recognise the impact that this will have had upon her, her family and the wider local community.

“Thankfully, I can say that incidents such as these are rare.

“The police are continuing to investigate this serious offence to trace the male responsible for targeting this lady in such a callous way.”

'Shocked and saddened'

The incident happened at around 4.30am on Thursday last week. The offender is described as 6ft tall and was wearing dark khaki clothing and a hat.

Inspector Clarke said: “We all want to feel safe in our homes and, as such, people are reminded to secure their doors and windows even when they are inside.

“Like the neighbours in this case, it is important that we look out for our elderly and vulnerable to increase our sense of community and general safety.”

Newark MP Mr Robert Jenrick wrote to the woman after the attack.

“I was very shocked and saddened to see what had happened,” he said.

“Nobody should be subjected to that level of violence. It is shocking to see that happen in a town like Newark, which usually has low levels of crime.”

Anyone with information about the identity of the intruder, or who saw anything suspicious near The Platts, should call 101 and quote incident 73 of June 8, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
