Southwell Minster receives tree in The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) Tree of Trees
Southwell Minster was delighted to receive a special tree from The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) Tree of Trees, which stood tall as a message of hope, regeneration and optimism to the nation and the world as part of the Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrations.
Southwell Minster joins over 300 organisations from across the UK who were recently announced by the QGC as recipients of these special trees in The Queen’s name, which are gifted in a pot embossed with Her Majesty’s cypher.
Presented by Sir John Peace, Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, the tree was planted on Saturday in the Palace Gardens of Southwell Minster.
The tree becomes part of the living legacy in honour of Her Majesty, joining over a million trees already planted across the UK as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.
“We are thrilled to be chosen for our contribution to the local community,” said the Very Rev Nicola Sullivan, Dean of Southwell.
“We are honoured and humbled to receive this very special rowan tree which will be for everyone to enjoy in the newly-replanted Palace Garden.
The minster has an active interest in caring for the natural environment and we are super excited to be part of the Platinum ‘Queen’s Green Canopy.’
Southwell Minster is among around 300 organisations to receive a tree in honour of her late Majesty The Queen.
The cathedral is part of a UK-wide network of inspiring organisations selected under the Queen's Green Canopy initiative, which was launched to mark the Queen's platinum jubilee and has now been extended in her memory.
Each organisation was selected because they "embody a spirit of selflessness and support, with a purpose dedicated to the betterment of their communities, the environment, and the nation."
Every county in the UK will receive at least one tree. In Nottinghamshire, trees will also be presented to Clumber Park, Victoria Embankment Memorial Gardens in Nottingham, and Browtowe Borough Council.
In Lincolnshire, there will be donations to the International Bomber Command Centre, Harlaxton College, and Lincolnshire Gardens Trust, while Rainbows Hospice will receive a tree in Leicestershire.
Lord Lieutenants will honour local organisations with gifting ceremonies now that the official tree planting season has started.
Sir Nicholas Bacon, chairman of The Queen’s Green Canopy, said: "We are proud to unveil this nationwide network of organisations chosen to become custodians of these special trees in Her Majesty’s name.
"In recognition of the positive impact that they have on their communities, the groups chosen represent the very best of Britain.
"The Queen’s Green Canopy hopes the trees will serve as an inspiration for tree planting within communities and to encourage care for the trees which already exist as part of our nation’s stunning landscape."
