Fundraising a piece of cake for Newark and Southwell Macmillan Cancer Support coffee mornings
Many community groups and businesses have held coffee mornings and cake sales for Macmillan Cancer Support — raising thousands for the charity.
The coffee mornings raised impressive totals, with plenty of cakes and hot drinks sold across the the Advertiser area.
A coffee morning at Hall Farm, Weston, raised more than £5,000 while offering a variety of entertainment.
More than 100 people went along to donate and take part in the activities.
“The event went really well. We had a great turnout all together, people were so participative and interested in the activities,” said Emily Stronach, one of the fundraisers and organisers.
The coffee morning included a cheque presentation to two representatives of Macmillan Cancer Support of £2.222.22, raised through a seven-mile swim challenge.
The trio, Emily, 20, and Samuel Stronach, 13, and their friend Ruby Doyle, 9, took part in a swim throughout July and August to raise extra money for the event.
Adding to the money raised through the swim, the coffee morning saw a total of £5.377.22 donated to Macmillan.
“I’m very proud of all of us that have done it, especially Ruby who managed to get the seven-miles when she’s only nine," Emily said.
The farm’s Knit and Natter Group was selling their own creations, and the event was also supported by a crew from Tuxford Fire Station.
Firefighters took the opportunity to speak with people about fire safety in the home, hand out top tips leaflets and offer safe and well visits as well as serving coffees and cakes to tables and topping up the beans in the coffee machine.
Joanne, wife of firefighter Lee, made and donated cupcakes with a fire service theme.
Elsewhere, Southwell and District Lions and Southwell Rotary Club raised £2,000 at their fundraiser at Southwell Methodist Church.
The cake stall was run by Lions and Rotary partners, alongside serving tea and coffee.
Ian Robinson, secretary for Southwell and District Lions Club said: “Lots of delicious cakes magically appeared early in the morning, only to be savoured by the many folk who came along to support this worthy cause.”
Visitors and volunteers contributed with baked or bought cakes and other treats.
There was also jigsaw puzzles, a plant sale, cards and a raffle.
Newark College also held a bake sale, raising £68.20 with cakes baked by members of staff.
Staff from Newark-based waste management solutions firm Novati also unleashed their inner Mary Berry to bake home-made cakes for their fundraiser.
The company's two-day bake sale raised a total of £320 for Macmillan.
Mandy Simpson, HR and wellbeing at Novati, helped organise the bake sale.
She said: "The coffee morning was a fantastic success, the team really enjoyed it and as always it was very well supported. The cakes were amazing too.
"All cakes were home-made, we have a team of expert bakers."
Staff pushed the boat out to create a large selection of tasty treats, including cheesecake, banana loaf, raspberry and lemon cake, red velvet, cupcakes, chocolate coated flapjacks, fruit loaf, chocolate brownies, cinnamon swirls and scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.
"We raised an impressive £320, we are extremely proud of our team, who put in a lot of effort into making this an amazing event," Mandy added.
"Macmillan is one of our chosen charities and we love to support them whenever we can. Macmillan is very dear to our hearts, and it is such a worthy cause."
Southwell Pink Ladies will also be holding a coffee morning on Saturday, October 8, at Southwell Library.
