Confirmed coronavirus cases in Newark and Sherwood reaches 5,092 (Monday, January 18) as three more district residents die 28 days after testing positive




Another 59 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Newark and Sherwood, according to the latest figures from Public Health England.

Ashfield 6,670 (up 69) Bassetlaw 5,716 (up 26) Broxtowe 5,206 (up 41) Gedling 6,020 (up 66) Mansfield 5,475 (up 84) Newark and Sherwood 5,092 (up 59) Rushcliffe 5,162 (up 47) Nottingham 23,691 (up 184) Nottinghamshire 39,341 (up 392).

In the last seven days there have been 398 positive cases recorded in Newark and Sherwood. This represents a slight decrease.

In the latest 24-hour period, three new deaths in Newark and Sherwood were recorded within 28 days of testing positive for the virus, according to the latest data. It takes the total to 142.

Ex-veterans Tony Parker, aged 81, and his wife Beryl Parker, aged 82, were among the first to receive a vaccination at the new centre at Newark Showground.

In total, the number of people vaccinated stands at 3,857,266 up to and including January 16 — the latest data.

According to the latest public data, 3,395,959 patients in the UK have tested positive and 89,261 people have died within 28 days of positive test.

Newark and Sherwood and Nottinghamshire — along with the whole country — remain in a third lockdown.

The latest restrictions are just as tough as those imposed in the first, March lockdown.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed schools will close and that exams this year will be cancelled.

He urged everyone to stay at home; work from home and avoid travel — unless absolutely necessary.

It comes after a surge in new infections across the country, following the identification of new strains of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the country's covid-19 alert level has been moved up to five due to the risk of healthcare services becoming overwhelmed.
