Nottinghamshire County Council set to declare a climate emergency at next full meeting
A motion to declare a climate emergency will be put forward at a full meeting of Nottinghamshire County Council on May 27 — the first full meeting since the local elections.
If passed, the council would formally agree to declare a climate emergency, and to delegate the new transport and environment committee to take the lead in considering, agreeing, and overseeing measures to deliver against the council’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in all its activities by 2030.
In May 2019, a motion calling for the council to set a carbon neutral target and closely monitor carbon emissions received unanimous support from councillors.
In October 2020, the council agreed to commit to carbon neutrality in all its activities by 2030 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Proposing the motion, council leader Ben Bradley said: “This would be a clear signal of our commitment to improving the environment.
“We are already working towards carbon neutrality in our buildings but this pledge is just the beginning.
“We want to work with industry and the government to help us to deliver against our pledge while still supporting economic recovery, attracting quality housing and delivering jobs in Nottinghamshire.”
