Southwell Racecourse leading the field with fixtures
Southwell Racecourse’s passion for leading the field with its ground-breaking fixtures will see it host some exciting events this spring.
The racecourse has been able to hugely increase its number of fixtures since installing state-of-the-art floodlighting a year ago.
In the last six months alone it has hosted 50 fixtures, compared with 31 over the same period last year.
The next floodlit meeting is a week on Saturday, when the racecourse holds one of its popular free race nights. More than 6,000 tickets have already been ordered.
The following weekend, on International Women’s Day, the course hosts a mixed meeting of eight races — four on the flat and four over jumps — exclusively for female jockeys.
The racecourse’s executive director, Mark Clayton, said British Racing had wanted to mark the day.
“We are absolutely delighted to get that fixture at Southwell. We are well set up to do it here.”
Only one other course has staged an all-female jockey fixture before, and it also only the second mixed-jump fixture this year.
Many of the race-day officials will also be female, as the course continues to promote women in all areas of the sport.
Mark Clayton said: “We are proud of the things we do here at Southwell.
“If we get a chance to do something innovative and different, we always will. The team here has got a great can-do attitude which enables us to rise to any occasion.”
On Saturday, March 21, a few days after St Patrick’s Day, the course will celebrate with Irish Night, complete with Irish stew, Guinness, and live music.
Tickets for the racecourse’s biggest event of the year, Ladies Day in August, went on sale this week.
