Three people were taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-serious injuries following a two-vehicle collision outside Asda on Lombard Street, Newark, which resulted in heavy congestion in the town centre.

The drivers of both a Suzuki Vitara and a BMW were taken to hospital following the crash which happened at 3.50pm on Friday.

Lombard Street was closed to traffic during the incident at its junction with Beaumond Cross and from, the opposite direction, the turning onto Castlegate from the Beastmarket Hill roundabout.

A police officer at the scene said the Vitara appeared to have "clipped" a couple of vehicles before colliding with the rear of the BMW.

There was extensive damage to the front of the Vitara. Fire and ambulance crews were at the scene.

The officer said the third person injured was an elderly woman pedestrian who tripped while trying to get out of the way.
