Southwell man cycled from London to Paris to raise funds for Leukaemia Care

A Southwell man has cycled more than 300 miles from London to Paris in memory of his beloved fiancée.

Rob Woodard, 46, raised funds for Leukaemia Care in memory of Rebecca Clarkson, known as Bex, who died from the disease in April 2023, aged 42.

Rebecca was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2020, and despite facing challenges, she remained determined to help others throughout her illness.

Rob’s ride is part of her legacy, his promise to carry her compassion forward and make a difference to people facing the same battle.

Rob said: “Bex was a truly amazing person and we all miss her more than words can ever say.

“Even when she was ill, she always thought of others before herself.

“She wanted to help people who were potentially in a less fortunate position.”

A validation manager for pharmaceutical company Catalent in Nottingham, Rob admits the challenge hasn’t been easy.

He said: “I wasn’t a regular cyclist before this, so I’ve pretty much been starting from zero.

“It’s also been difficult fitting in the training around work.

“But while it’s been hard, I have really enjoyed spending time outdoors in the recent nice weather.

“And, knowing I’m doing it for Bex has kept me going.”

Rob added. “I want to support Leukaemia Care by raising money, and awareness, to help people that are in the same position so they can get the information and support they need.”

Colin Dyer, chief executive of Leukaemia Care, said: “We’re incredibly moved by Rob’s story and grateful for his remarkable effort in memory of Bex. Taking on a challenge like this is no small feat, especially while navigating personal loss.

“His determination to honour Bex’s legacy and support others facing leukaemia embodies the very spirit of our charity.

“Every pound raised helps us provide vital support, information and hope to patients and their families across the UK.”
