Cycling club members staged their first charity ride in memory of a former professional cyclist.

Collingham Velo Club raised money for Newark’s Beaumond House Community Hospice in memory of Mr John Aslin, of South Scarle, who died of cancer in 1999.

The hospice supported Mr Aslin in his final days, and eight members of the club raised money with a 60-mile ride on Saturday.

They braved freezing conditions to take on a route that started and finished in South Scarle.

On their return, the cyclists were greeted by Mr Aslin’s wife, Mrs Viki Aslin, two daughters and grandchildren, who provided hot drinks, cakes and sandwiches.

Mrs Aslin said: “Thank you to the club for organising the first annual John Aslin Memorial Ride.

“We are so proud of my husband and extremely grateful to the club, especially Stephen Baldwin, for organising this race and honouring him.”

Collingham Velo Club has 32 members and was formed in May last year.
