Work has begun on the demolition of the old Grove School on London Road, Balderton.

A digger can be seen on site ripping down the old buildings.

A replacement school, called The Newark Academy, opened directly behind the old one in January at a cost of £20m.

This followed a campaign by parents, then Newark MP Patrick Mercer and the Advertiser that began in 2009.

The Grove, a comprehensive, opened in 1957.

The neighbouring leisure centre will shut on April 22 and be knocked down too with activities transferred to a new leisure centre, the Newark Sports and Fitness Centre off Bowbridge Road which opens in May.
