Discarded cigarette butt caused fire at Wetherspoons

A discarded cigarette started a fire at Wetherspoons pub.

The nub was dropped and fell through a grate, causing a fire in a disused basement at the Sir John Arderne in Newark Market Place.

Wetherspoons said the the grate will be covered up.

Two firecrews from Newark attended the fire on Monday afternoon and were at the scene for around an hour.

They tackled the blaze with a hose reel and fire extinguishers.

The pub was evacuated and a cordon put in place to prevent people getting too close.

The pub closed but was expected to re-open last night.
