Newark and Sherwood District Council joins No Mow May campaign

Council-owned green space will be left to grow next month as part of a charity campaign.

Newark and Sherwood District Council will take part in Plantlife's No Mow May campaign in a bid to help support wildlife.

A spokesman for the council said: "We are taking part in #NoMowMay by leaving some areas of our council parks and green spaces wild.

"This includes areas of Sconce and Devon Park, Sherwood Heath, Vicar Water Country Park, as well as the open spaces at Clay Lane and Newbury Road in Newark, Boughton housing open space and a number of closed churchyards that we look after including Southwell and Blidworth."

Research by people across the UK, who have taken part in Plantlife’s Every Flower Counts, revealed leaving lawns unmowed improved the diversity of wild flowers growing on lawns and could result in enough nectar for ten times more bees and other pollinators.

Kevin Thompson, of Bleasby, is a member of Plantlife. He said it was fantastic to see the council offer its support.

"Our next plan is to make the parks more wildlife friendly," said Kevin.

"Lets hope that when people get used to seeing flowers amongst the grass, they will change their attitude and not think of certain flowers as weeds.

"It has cheered me up (to see the council has joined the campaign)."
