Newark and Sherwood to pause in tribute to the fallen on Remembrance Sunday — here's everything you need to know
Veterans and residents across the district will pause on Sunday to pay their respects to those who have given their lives for their country.
In Newark, the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry will parade with members of the Newark Branch of the Royal British Legion and representatives from the ex-service associations, sea, army and air Cadets.
The parade will leave the London Road carpark at around 10.45am, marching via Baldertongate to arrive at the war memorial on Appletongate.
Anyone wanting to take part should ensure they are at the carpark no later than 10.30am.
Musical accompaniment will be provided by the Newark Town Band.
The Mayor of Newark, Lisa Geary, will lead a civic procession to the war memorial from the town hall at 10.45am.
A wreath-laying ceremony will then take place, with prayers led by The Rev Chris Lion. Two minutes’ silence will be observed at 11am.
Deputy Town Mayor Laurence Goff will lay wreathes at the First World War Cross and the Memorial to the Fallen — with the silence and Act of Homage observed — at Newark Cemetery.
A service will be held in Newark Parish Church at 11.15am after which there will be a march past in the Market Place when the salute will be taken.
Brigadier Michael Browne, who has attended the Remembrance Sunday event for many years in his capacity as Deputy Lieutenant has now stepped down. He will be attending as an old comrade, but will stand with Sir Andrew for the memorial service.
The parade will return to London Road carpark via the Market Place, Bridge Street and Baldertongate.
Road closures will be in place from 7am on Cartergate, Baldertongate (from the London Road carpark entrance) Barnbygate (from the Methodist Church) and Appletongate (from Mount Street) and the Market Place until around 1pm.
London Road carpark will also be closed to allow the parade to form.
The Balderton parade will be led by the Scout and Guide Band, as is traditional.
Veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces, Balderton and Fernwood parish councils, cadets, the emergency services, Women’s Institute, Scouts, Cubs, Boy’s Brigade, Guides and Brownies will muster in Main Street by the post office at 10.15am.
It will march to St Giles’ Church, which has been adorned with a net of thousands of home-made poppies, where there will be a service.
The parade will then march back to the war memorial outside the Methodist Church where there will be a further service, wreaths laid and two minutes of silence observed.
A decline in the numbers of members attending meetings of the Royal British Legion’s Balderton branch has led to the branch being disbanded and so the standard will be retired after this year’s Remembrance Day parade.
The Southwell Remembrance Day Act of Remembrance will take place outside the minster rather the Burgage this year, starting at around 10.45am.
There will be a procession into the minster for the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial Window and a short service.
Poppy petals will then once again be dropped from the minster ceiling.
In Bingham, the ceremony will take place at Bingham Market Square from 10.50am.
Participants are asked to assemble behind the Buttercross before 10.40am where they will be directed to a space.
Spectators are asked to remain outside the marked out area.
Newark Air Museum’s annual Remembrance service will take place at the RAF Winthorpe Memorial at 3pm on Sunday.
The service will commemorate all the service personnel who are remembered on the various memorials and tributes around the museum site.
The service is due to be led by the Rev Alan Boyd, with various local service organisations in attendance along with civic dignitaries.
The parade will assemble between 2.30pm and 2.45pm in the museum café on the Southfield Site. Visitors and museum members are welcome to attend.
The Armistice will be honoured at 11am today with the Last Post and silences on the steps of Newark Town Hall and in Bingham Market Place.
