Councillors at parish, district and county level today issue an invitation to voters throughout Newark and Sherwood to come join them.

The district council is supporting an on-going campaign, Be a Councillor, to get more people involved in the running of local government and is urging people to attend a special information evening on the subject which will be held at Kelham Hall on Tuesday, November 25.

The open evening will offer practical advice on how to go about standing for election to your local council or councils.

Roger Blaney, leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “To have effective, democratic local government, a council needs to have people who will give of their time to represent and stand up for their communities. Who can make their voice heard, champion local services and help shape the future.

“Being a parish, district or county councillor is both challenging and rewarding, giving you the opportunity to help frame the future for the benefit of local people.

"We may hear criticism of our councils and the services they provide but being a councillor gives you the opportunity to make things better – to help bring change yourself.”

Ian Harrison, chairman of North Muskham Parish Council, said: “If you care for your community, your country and indeed the future, then standing as a councillor at whatever level, can give you a vehicle to make a difference.

"I have been a parish councillor and chair of a parish council for over 14 years and have enjoyed every minute. "Sometimes it can be a challenging role - people have different views - but as long as you have listened and applied your judgement in working out what is appropriate and right, then there is great satisfaction that you have done your best and supported the community."

District council chief executive Andrew Muter said: “Councillors have an important role to play in shaping the future for our communities and we hope lots of people will come along on the night and find out more."

Local government elections take place in May.

Anyone can attend the meeting, which takes place from 6pm-8.15pm.
