First look at latest designs for Newark’s Yorke Drive regeneration
Work on Newark’s Yorke Drive regeneration scheme took another step forward this week as residents got to see emerging designs for the project.
Newark and Sherwood District Council and its development partner, Compendium Living, invited those directly impacted by the proposals to an online consultation.
More than 120 residents were invited over the two days to view and discuss the emerging designs for the scheme, including streetscape imagery, floor plans and an outline for project phasing.
Council leader David Lloyd said: “The regeneration of Yorke Drive has been a priority for the council for a number of years and the plans will transform the estate to make it safer and a place people and families can be proud of living in.
“The plans are ambitious — 320 new mixed tenure homes will be developed to meet modern space standards and these will be available for both market sale and renting.
“We are pleased to see the momentum that has already been generated.
“Everyone who lives, works or is involved in some way with the area has been kept fully up to date with the scheme and there have been plenty of opportunities to get involved, such as this week’s consultation.”
Dave Bullock, managing director of Compendium Living, said: “There has been a significant amount of work behind the scenes over the last few months, including ground investigations and surveys, to allow us to develop detailed designs, which we have been happy to start sharing this week.
“We have a programme to start on-site next September and are raring to go. A submission for detailed planning permission for the first phase is due by the end of February, 2021.”
The scheme to transform and regenerate Yorke Drive was approved in April last year, subject to finalising funding.
Work has progressed, despite the pandemic.
It will see 320 market and affordable homes built, better sport and play facilities on the existing playing fields, a new access road, and a new community pavilion.
Some existing homes will be demolished to make way for the development.
It is expected that the project will take approximately eight years to complete.
Residents and stakeholders have been involved in extensive consultation throughout.
Further consultation will take place and be open to a wider range of stakeholders and members of the public in January 2021.
Diane Ledger, a Yorke Drive resident, said: “The overall aesthetic of the plans are pleasing and it’s encouraging to see the ideas from residents have been used in the overall design of the buildings and outdoor spaces.
“Once work on-site starts I’m intrigued to see how the vision of the architects becomes reality.”
