A 35-year-old man has been given a 120-day prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, by Nottingham magistrates.

Gavin Leggett, of Williams Lane, Fernwood, denied assault and having an offensive weapon — a sledgehammer — on Dale Crescent, Fernwood.

He was found guilty on both counts by Nottingham magistrates.

The magistrates ruled there had been little reason to attack the complainant and no reason to go away and return with a weapon.

Leggett was placed on supervision for 18 months, during which time he must have treatment for alcohol dependency for six months and carry out 120 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £400 compensation and £700 costs.

Leggett admitted possession of cocaine and failing to surrender to custody and was fined a total of £250.
