Reader’s letter: Good sense in rethink decision

Thank goodness common sense has prevailed at Newark Town Council and the unfathamable decision to object to the A46 dualling project is going to be debated by full council.

While I have every respect for councillors and the job they do, I cannot help but think this was a political decision rather than one that was best for the town.

I have lived in the town for many years and in all that time there has been a campaign to dual the A46. This shows the strength of support in the town for such a project.

The opinions and statistics of the various lobby groups and national organisations supporting the economic benefits of the dualling should also not be ignored.

The five who objected say the dualling would only bring short-term benefits and then traffic would increase again. Nonsense. This hasn’t happened where the rest of the A46 has been dualled.

With regards to it creating pollution. I suggest the five councillors have a walk around Newark on a Friday afternoon and witness the fumes coming from all the vehicles stuck in the gridlocked traffic on our road network! — A. CHAMBERS, Newark.
