Grassed area set to become flats

Four flats could be built on an area usually overrun with parked vehicles.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has applied to build four one-bedroom flats on grassed amenity land in the middle of Meldrum Crescent, Newark.

Members of Newark Town Council’s planning committee did not object to the proposal.

Committee chairman Mr Tony Roberts said the grass was often used by motorists parking their cars and it had become a mess.

“There is a need for smaller accommodation as the population gets older and there is more need for one and two bedroom accommodation than there is for the usual three-bedroom stuff,” he said.

“It only uses up part of the amenity land and the amenity was lost some time ago because of the parking situation.”

The district council will decide the application.
