Great British Spring Clean launches with programme of activities in Newark and Sherwood
The Great British Spring Clean kicks-off today, launching a host of activities across Newark and Sherwood over the next two weeks.
The national initiative runs until Sunday, April 2, encouraging the public to join forces with a councils, community groups and businesses to tackle littering in their area.
Several events are being organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council.
Council leader David Lloyd said: “We’re all pleased to have a cleaner, safer, greener Newark and Sherwood, it is something we aspire to, it is something we want to do.
“This is also an opportunity also to get out and about, meet one another, do something proactive in our communities, and make one another properly proud of the area I know we are already proud to live in.”
Many residents and community groups have already pledged to take part in litter picking across the district and there is still plenty of time to organise your own spring-cleaning event if you would like to get involved.
The council works with the volunteers to provide them, and accompany them where possible, with the equipment needed for the litter picking and afterwards come to collect any bags of waste collected and dispose of them.

Last year, 232 bags were collected by 248 residents from Newark and Sherwood who took part in the spring clean.
In addition to litter-picking, the council is also holding a day of action in Balderton, will plant major oak saplings, and open up the community garden next to Newark Library.
