Gritting crews will be taking to the roads tonight (Friday) and again over the weekend, with forecasters predicting a prolonged cold spell for the next few days.

Nottinghamshire County Council crews are set to take to the roads from 7pm tonight and will complete a full run of all the published gritting routes which includes A and B roads and main bus routes.

This will be followed by another run on snow routes.

Road surface temperatures are expected to drop overnight with the risk of frost and icy patches forming.

Wintry showers are expected early Saturday morning with a small risk of isolated deposits, particularly over high ground.

A widespread frost and patchy ice is predicted for Saturday night with Sunday remaining cold with the possibility of some rain or sleet showers and frost and patchy ice expected again overnight and into Monday.

Over the past few days crews have been inspecting and refilling roadside yellow grit bins across the county and will have completed all areas by the end of Friday.

The county council has the capacity to store 22,000 tonnes of salt in its four grit barns and stocks currently stand at 14,424 with more deliveries expected next week.

The county council is advising people to play their part in keeping the county on the move by following the Government’s Snow Code which gives clear advice on clearing snow and ice safely.
