Surplus money raised for Harley Smith's buggy donated to Orchard School

The nearly £3,000 surplus from a campaign to raise money for a specialised buggy for a teen with a rare disease has been presented to the school where he is a pupil.

Harley Smith,13, of Farndon, has nicolaides-baraitser syndrome (NCBRS) and was in need of a new buggy as he had outgrown his current one.

Fundraising met the cost of the buggy — £2,408 — but there was more than that amount left over.

So, nearly £3,000 was presented to the Orchard School, a special school that Harley, from Farndon, attends, that has sites at Newark and Balderton.

A presentation of £300 was also made to the Newark RAFA Club, which was the venue for two music nights that helped raise the money.

Family member, Bob Macrae-Clifton, of Newark, swam in the River Trent to raise money and Harley's sister Cassie Kent did two car boot sales.

There was also a crowdfunding page set up.

Mr Macrae-Clifton said: "What was raised exceeded my wildest expectations.

"I hoped we'd raise enough for the buggy, but I always have a plan B for any extra."

Among the donations on the crowdfunding page were anonymous donations of £200 and one from a company in the Wirral that makes trampolines that has no connection to Harley's family.

Lisa Whaley, from the Orchard School's friends' group, said: "Robert (Bob) has been a massive support to the friends this year.

"He is a really active fundraiser.

"Friends are delighted that Robert has been raising funds for the school.

"We have used some of the money to buy an interactive education tilt table.

"The rest we are putting towards extra fundraising to get much-needed equipment for the children.

"This will be really useful for when the school is rebuilt.

"We need to raise enough money to purchase Ipads, laptops and other technology.

"Any local companies who can offer support, feel free to contact the friends."

The new buggy means Harley will be able to join his family on beach days.

It was needed because he had outgrown the old one and was tipping it over.
