The Newark Advertiser found out if Britain is becoming less tolerant
In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser found out if Britain is becoming less tolerant and what could be causing it.
Last weekend, hundreds of people attended an anti-migration demonstration outside Castle House in Newark, and the May local elections this year also saw Reform making big gains as it won 677 out of around 1,600 seats.
Now, the Advertiser wanted to hear people’s opinions — has Britain become less tolerant? And what has caused that?
Audrey Springham said: “I don’t think we have become less tolerant.
“I think they are sick of the present government and the situation in Britain right now.”
Pat Clark said the opposite: “Probably because there is a lot of immigration, but I do think people have lost tolerance for anything.”
Couple Angela and Tony Sherwood agreed that there are too many people who come to ‘this country’ [England] and ‘do not observe or tolerate our culture’.
Some people referred to the use of the word ‘queer’ and how 30 to 40 years ago, it was considered an insult, while nowadays it is a word that people accept.
It was also highlighted that people have become less judgmental of one another and more accepting of each other’s differences.
Gill B. said: “I think certain factions possibly have become less tolerant, and I think social media has a big effect on it.
“I think at the same time, a lot of people are becoming more tolerant, as people are becoming less judgmental, more accepting, so I think it is balanced.
“I would like to imagine a world where we are all more tolerant and more accepting, but that is not the case.”
Tom Foley said that he thought people are just sick of empty promises and no change in politics.
“If you look at the big picture, people have become more tolerant — the world has evolved, and I would like to think that Britain has evolved with it.”
Couple Anne and Richard Lloyd said that they believed people have become less tolerant because Britain is losing its identity.
The Advertiser now asks its readers — Do you think Britain has become less tolerant?
