Winthorpe Action Group, Think Again, says National Highways listened to A46 concerns — but more can be done
Campaigners concerned about the impact of the dualling of the A46 said National Highways had listened to their concerns listening but more could be done to safeguard their community.
The Winthorpe Action Group, Think Again, has lobbied for the village to be better protected from the scheme.
Think Again member Andy Leary said: “We are pleased that they have listened and credit to them for that. They have spoken to us and engaged with us and we have a good relationship.
“They took on some of the points we put forward. In that respect, it’s good news but they didn’t fully adopt the option three that we put forward and we think there’s still more that can be done. For instance, they’ve taken the road bridge 75 metres to the south than was originally proposed.
“We think showground land to the north of the existing A46 would be better than the road passing through ancient park land near to the old Mint Leaf and the garage and we await further clarifications on some things such as the Winthorpe underpass. What will be the layout for the roundabout?
“Noise and vibration remain concerns. We are not against the project, but we want to see it done in the best possible way for residents.”
Newark MP Robert Jenrick said he was pleased the preferred route for the dualling of the A46 had been announced, but he continued to be there for residents affected.
Mr Jenrick said: “The project has passed another milestone in its journey and signals the government’s full support for the project to proceed.
“This is positive news for the town and the coming together of many years of campaigning, by me and many others.
“Positive though this investment is to our area, I appreciate that it will be with mixed emotions that those living near to the road read this news. Indeed for some, likely to be significantly negatively impacted, it will be most unwelcome news.
“Although I have advocated the project, I want you to know that I am here to represent your views and ensure the best possible result for you — in terms of route, mitigation of sound and views, and in terms of compensation where appropriate.”
