Planners have given the go-ahead for a house on stilts to be built in a flood zone.

The single-storey property will be built at Great North Road, Cromwell.

The house will be on stilts with room underneath for parking. It will have four bedrooms and two parking spaces.

The application was approved by Newark and Sherwood District Council planning committee.

The site is currently used for storage and is screened from the road by mature trees and a hedge.

Committee member Mrs Sue Saddington said: “The parish council support this. There are no real objections.

“It is a different design. They (the applicants) have taken care of flooding, because it would be their car that would get damaged if the site flooded.”

Mrs Saddington said the parish council wanted the front hedge to be retained.

Mrs Maureen Dobson said: “I cannot really object to this.

“If more houses were built on stilts we could build on areas prone to flooding.”

Cromwell Parish Meeting said regular maintenance of a culvert and ditches had significantly reduced the flooding risk.
