Homeless shelter to open as temperatures set to plummet
Rough sleepers will be offered a warm place to stay overnight as temperatures are set to drop in Newark this weekend.
The shelter, in Barnbygate Methodist Church, will open on Sunday at 9pm to give homeless people supper, hot drinks and a bed to sleep in, followed by breakfast in the morning.
Doors open at 9pm and close at 10.30pm to make sure a full night’s rest is had.
Homelessness advisors will also be on hand to offer help to individuals before they leave the shelter.
The shelter, which is run by volunteers, opens when there are three consecutive nights of zero Celsius or below.
Cheska Asman, Newark and Sherwood District Council’s homelessness strategy and projects officer, said: “It is important that we reach the rough sleepers of Newark in these conditions.
"There will be hot food and drinks on offer and we make sure there are people on hand to advise and support the homeless people who come to the shelter.”
