Severn Trent Water’s £1m work to improve water supplies across the Kelham area is now complete.

Throughout the half term, Kelham Road – the A617, a busy route into Newark – has been closed, but the water company has been able to complete the works quicker than planned with the road due to re-open at lunchtime today rather than this evening.

Severn Trent Water area manager, Bob Taylor, said: “We’re pleased to be able to open Kelham Road today.

"We’ve worked together with the local council so they can carry out repairs to Kelham Bridge over the River Trent, while we’ve been laying our new pipe.

"This helps to minimise disruption to the local community and means that the road closure has allowed two jobs to be completed at once.

“The majority of the £1 million work has primarily been completed in fields and we’ve only had to close Kelham Road for a week.

"The pipe improvements mean that the water supply system is able to cope with future demands, allowing new houses to be built and it will also allow us to reroute water around our network, so villages’ water supplies continue to work if there is a burst.

"We’d like to say thanks to road users and the local community for their patience, this work will bring benefits for years to come.”

The water pipe improvements have been carried out by Severn Trent Water’s contract partner, Laing O’Rourke.
