Police were called to an address on Millgate at 5.10pm on Wednesday.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbour Mr Tony Parker said: "The air ambulance arrived at about 5.30pm last night.
"We had it all here with the air ambulance and the police."
By 9am this morning, a bunch of flowers had been left beside the front gate of the house.
It is believed that a couple thought to be in their 60s lived in the property.
Neighbour Mary Coupland, of Southfield House, said she had known the couple since they moved in from Elston around two years ago.
She said: "I just couldn't get over it because it's such a shock. She was really kind.
"I have got her telephone number and she said whenever you want me, if you have got to get anywhere, don't be afraid to ask me."
Mary said the woman had taken her to hospital to have an injection around five months ago.
"She didn't work but they used to foster before," said Mary. "She was about 60.
"They always seemed to be doing something, he was always on the go with equipment and moving stuff.
"It's just so sad and it's very shocking."
Neighbour Mrs Shirley Wilford, of Southfield House, described them as a lovely couple.
She said they had just returned from a holiday in Scotland.
"They would do anything for you," she said.
"They had just come back from a ten-day holiday and she said it was lovely and they enjoyed it."
Mrs Wilford said the helicopter had hovered overhead until about 6.45pm.
She said: "It's so unbelievable, I have known her since she moved in and I can't take it in.
"They used to walk past here and there was always a wave or a hello.
"She's such a good person and she has been fostering for years.
"You don't expect something like that and he was very helpful if you wanted a lift anywhere.
"I can't speak of them highly enough. You couldn't wish for nicer neighbours."
