Man charged over A1 fatal crash

A 38-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash on the A1 at Newark.

Mr Dorel Galan, of London Road, Grays, Essex, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of using a false instrument, contrary to the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981.

He will appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on October 5.

Police were called to the collision on the northbound carriageway at about 7.55am on Thursday, March 9.

It involved six vehicles.

The driver of one of the vehicles, 52-year-old Mr Ian Newell, from Grantham, Lincolnshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Newell worked for Lincolnshire County Council, in the role of business and public protection manager. He had worked at the authority since 1993.

Another man, the driver of one of two lorries involved in the crash, was cut free from his vehicle and airlifted to Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

A woman was taken to hospital by ambulance and three other men were treated for injuries at the scene. Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening or life-altering.
