Black History Month: Memories of second world war efforts remembered
Black History Month remembered the contribution of black airmen serving with American forces and the RAF during the second world war.
In 1944, airfields including Fulbeck were occupied by airmen and troops of the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Troop Carrier Command.
South Kesteven District Council said black soldiers were essential operational back-up for those involved in the uplift of thousands of troops and tonnes of equipment to Europe that year, including D-Day and Arnhem. Black aircrew also enlisted with the RAF and Bomber Command.
Council chairman Breda-Rae Griffin said: “We continually pay tribute to this district’s aviation heritage, but that history is not complete without recognising the role of black servicemen who came here to fight alongside our forces.”
