The A1 was closed at South Muskham and two motorists turned around and drove over the verge to escape the queue

Two drivers are being sent to court following an incident on the A1 Southbound.

The A1 was closed between the slip roads at South Muskham earlier this evening.

Traffic was able to use the roundabout to rejoin the A1 after the junction, but two drivers ignored the police directions by turning around on the A1 and driving over the verge to escape the queue, with one driving away.

The drivers are now facing being sent to court.

A spokesman for Newark Police said: "It is better to be stuck in the queue than to be in the crash at the front of it.

"We will not tolerate people who do such reckless things when we are trying to deal with an incident.

"We are really grateful for the patience of the people stuck in the traffic. Those who were stuck will know that we released the trapped traffic as soon as we could.

"Thank you to the kind drivers who helped us."
