Newark MP and another meet with Ukrainian Ambassador to UK to discuss prisoners of war Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner
MPs representing two constituents held as prisoners of war by the Russians have met with the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK.
Newark MP Robert Jenrick and Richard Fuller, MP for North East Bedfordshire, met Ambassador Vadym Prystaiko regarding Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner to discuss what could be done to ensure they are set free.
Both Aiden, from Newark, and Shaun were captured by the Russians while defending Mariupol from the Russian invaders.
Both men were paraded on Russian state TV after their capture in flagrant breach of the Geneva Convention, which bans the use of prisoners of war for propaganda purposes.
This week, soldiers from Ukraine’s Azov Battalion who were holed-up in the Azovstal Steelworks, Mariupol, were expected to be part of a prisoner swap, bolstering hopes that Aiden and Shaun, who were both serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces and not volunteers, could soon be on their way home.
Mr Jenrick said: “Aiden and Shaun, like all prisoners of war, must be treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention.
“We are seeking their release as soon as practicable.”
