Multi-million pound bridge will allow hundreds of homes to be built
A new multi-million pound bridge across the A46 will allow hundreds of new homes to be built on an old RAF site.
Highways England today pledged £2.91m for the project, helping to connect the former RAF Newton site with Bingham.
Up to 550 new homes could now be built thanks to the scheme, which will also receive £970,000 of private funding.
“The link bridge directly supports the development of 550 new dwellings proposed at RAF Newton, said Mr Simon Robinson, leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council.
“It will provide direct pedestrian and cycle access across the A46 between the RAF Newton and Bingham development sites.
“This will mean the current and future residents of the RAF Newton settlement will have sustainable access to a wide range of retail and commercial amenities on offer in Bingham, and better access to employment opportunities both in the town itself and the greater Nottingham area through improved access to public transport links.
“RAF Newton is a key site on the A46 and the funding for the bridge brings us a step closer to realising our targets and ambitions for this key growth corridor.”
It is currently unknown when the bridge will be built.
The announcement is part of a multi-million pound road upgrade across the UK by
Highways England to bring more than 4,300 jobs and over 1,700 homes for people in the Midlands, the South East, North West and South West of England.
Money is coming from its Growth and Housing Fund, which was set up as part of the government’s £15 billion investment in roads and provides financial contributions towards the cost of road improvements needed for new developments that provide new jobs and homes.
