Newark and Bingham MP Robert Jenrick on 'deeply flawed' mini-budget, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and yet another tough job, this time immigration

The recent month has been a turbulent time in politics, writes Mr Jenrick in the Advertiser.

Although it was and still is right to aspire to grow the economy, the mini-budget was deeply flawed.

It caused market instability and increased borrowing costs. With these errors of judgment it was clear that Liz Truss could not continue. As hard as it must have been personally, I respect her decision to resign, to help restore market confidence and unite the party around Rishi Sunak.

I am proud to have my friend and colleague Rishi Sunak lead the nation. Over the summer I campaigned tirelessly to help Rishi become elected as the Conservative Party leader and our Prime Minister. It was clear then and is even more clear now that Rishi understands the economic situation of our country as we emerge out of the pandemic and battle with the economic side effects of the terrible war in Ukraine.

One of the reasons I campaigned so robustiously for Rishi over the summer was that I fundamentally believe he will restore public confidence in our party, the country and lead us to better times. Working with him in Cabinet I saw his determination to save livelihoods through coronavirus with the furlough scheme and I am sure he will bring this strong work ethic, intelligence, compassion and natural leadership to the role of Prime Minister.

I was honoured to be asked by him to serve in Cabinet again, this time as Minister of State in the Home Office, tackling illegal immigration. I seem to be sent from one difficult job to another! I take this as a compliment, but who knows!

I look forward to my new role, with the ongoing channel crossings challenge and delivering refugee schemes for those from Hong Kong and Ukraine.

The public want to see secure borders and an end to the abuse of our broken asylum system by economic migrants. We are a big hearted country that welcomes those in genuine need of refuge. But that generosity is seen as absurd by many, and that must end.

Although I might have been appointed to a new government role, my first priority has been, and always will be, to serve the people of Newark and surround areas, representing your views and being a strong voice in parliament for our great area.
