Newark MP Robert Jenrick welcomes removal of illegally dumped waste mountain in Newark
Newark MP Robert Jenrick has welcomed the fact that a mountain of waste illegally dumped on wasteland in Newark has been moved — but says more needs to be done to ensure the act is not repeated.
Nottinghamshire County Council first became aware that waste materials were being dumped in January 2015.
The Environment Agency raided the site as part of a nation-wide operation targetting the illegal dumping of waste and the avoidance of landfill tax. It promised a speedy resolution.
However, it fell to the county council to pursue the issue under planning legislation.
Mr Jenrick said: “It was a blight on people’s lives in that part of Newark for several years. It was a scandal perpetuated by people who got away scot-free.
“I took the council to meet then secretary of state Angela Leadsom to demand that the Environment Agency action and belatedly they did, with the county.”
Mr Jenrick said although the circumstances of the case were not known, he lamented the fact, as confirmed by the Environment Agency, that no prosecutions would follow the illegal dumping on Bowbridge Road.
“In some cases, this can be a very lucrative business and linked to serious and organised crime,” he said.
“People who do this need need to be brought to justice otherwise it will continue in our area and others.
“I want to see more of them brought to book rather than get away with it.”
