'Vandals' dump garden waste on to RAF Balderton war memorial less than a fortnight before Remembrance Sunday
Garden waste was fly-tipped on to a war memorial in an abhorrent act less than two weeks before Remembrance Sunday.
The waste was dumped on to the memorial to those who left RAF Balderton never to return in the second world war that stands on the edge of a field at Fernwood.
Pete Stevens, a member of the RAF Balderton Research Group who were instrumental in installing the memorial, described the act as abhorrent.
Mr Stevens, who used to work for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, said: "It was completely disrespectful of the sacrifices those airmen made, and so near to Remembrance Day.
"The people who have done it have no brains to be honest.
They are just vandals.
"They know that's a war memorial. It isn't inconspicuous and if it wasn't obvious enough there are poppy wreaths on it. It's the only thing there."
The fly-tip was noticed dumped this morning (Tuesday) and has now been removed along two builders' bags of green waste on the opposite side of the road.
It is the second desecration of the site by fly-tippers. On the first occasion, furniture was dumped there.
