Permits not the solution

I cannot help but think that while residents’ parking permits (Permit Plan Set To Ease Town Parking Issues, Advertiser, August 6) will be great for the streets where they are to be imposed, they will simply shift the problem elsewhere.

On and off-street parking throughout Newark has been the subject of much debate for years and perhaps now is the time to look at the problem across the board.

People park on streets while at work instead of paying for all-day parking in a long-stay town carpark. Also, many houses do not have off-road parking so residents’ have to park on the road.

Unfortunately, Newark’s roads were just not designed for on-street parking so all it does is make it difficult to keep traffic flowing — adding to another of Newark’s problems.

Residents’ parking schemes may seem a good idea, but it isn’t going to suddenly make commuters start using carparks instead of free on-road parking.

They will just find another street, probably outside someone’s house, where they can leave their cars. Thus the problem starts again.

There needs to be some incentive to encourage commuters to use the long-stay carparks.

While I sympathise with the people living in the areas affected, I think those living in nearby streets will, rightly, be worried about what it means for them.

There isn’t a simple solution, certainly not a cost-free one, but something needs to be done.
