Newark and District Photographic Society display photos in Spotlight Gallery at Newark Town Hall

The latest exhibition in the Spotlight Gallery at Newark Town Hall is giving amateur photographers a chance to showcase their work — but they are hoping to find somewhere to stage an even bigger display.

Members of Newark and District Photographic Society are exhibiting 24 images of subjects, ranging from portraits and nature to landscapes and sport.

The exhibition, called All Our Own Work, opened last week and continues until March 9.

It is open from Monday to Saturday, from 10.30am to 3.30pm, and entry is free.

Most of the photographs selected for the exhibition have won competitions, both within the society, and in national and international competitions.

Committee member Keith Pettitt said members were invited to submit images for selection for the exhibition, and the pictures chosen represented 19 photographers.

The club, which was formed in 1938, would love to have the opportunity to show a bigger range of members’ work in a larger, annual exhibition.

Keith said: “We are looking for somewhere to exhibit, but it is difficult to find suitable spaces.”

They would like somewhere that is easily accessible and large enough to hold more than the 24 images the Spotlight Gallery can accommodate.

The society used to have an annual exhibition at Newark Showground, but would like somewhere in the town if possible.

Newark and District Photographic Society was founded to promote and support amateur photography in and around the town.

It currently has a membership of about 70 keen photographers, who meet weekly from September to April.

Meetings have guest speakers who talk about their photographic techniques and experiences, and members can also receive independent, constructive criticism of their work in club competitions.

Members have a diverse range of photographic interests, including nature, studio, sports, landscape, street, creative and monochrome specialities, some examples of which are on display in the exhibition.

They range from beginners to highly-accomplished photographers, primarily using digital cameras and processing techniques.

Many of the images on display in the exhibition are for sale, and anyone who would like a copy should email the society to be put in touch with the photographer.

Anyone wanting to learn more about the society is invited to visit its website, www.newark photoclub.com, or go along to one its club nights as a visitor.

During the season the weekly meetings are normally held on Mondays between 7.30pm and 10pm at the Sheldon Suite at Newark Showground.

Anyone who can help with the offer of a venue suitable for the club to stage an annual exhibition is invited to get in touch by email on president@newarkphotoclub.com or Guy Branston on publicity@newark photoclub.com
