Nottinghamshire Police praised for handling of Newark anti-migration demonstration by Newark and Sherwood District Council’s portfolio holder for public protection and community relations
Nottinghamshire Police have been praised for their handling of a recent anti-migration demonstration, which took place in Newark over the weekend.
The demonstration was organised by the Patriotic Alternative group outside Castle House in Newark, with a counter-protest also organised by Stand Up to Racism also taking place.
There was a large police presence during the demonstration, and the force have confirmed that no arrests were made relating to the demonstration.
Newark and Sherwood District Council’s portfolio holder for public protection and community relations, Paul Taylor, praised the police response.
He said: “I'd like to extend a huge thank you to Nottinghamshire Police for their effective handling of the recent demonstration in Newark.
“They successfully managed to keep a protest, organised by the far-right group Patriotic Alternative, separate from a counter-protest by Nottinghamshire Stand Up to Racism, ensuring the safety of our community.”
The police could not comment about the event for operational reasons, but confirmed that no incidents or arrests were made in relation the demonstration.
John Robinson, chief executive at Newark and Sherwood District Council, added: “The demonstration was a lawful protest, which was monitored by Nottinghamshire Police.
“We were made aware of the planned activity in advance and liaised with the Police to support their operations.
“As part of our efforts to assist with public safety, we closed the District Council car parks on Police advice and provided cooperation as needed.”
