Race to the peak for two Newark gyms in charity challenge for Beaumond House Hospice Care

Staff and members at two gyms are set to race to scale the height of Everest while raising money for charity.

Active 4 Today's Newark Sports and Fitness Centre gym and The Gym Group Newark are competing to climb 3403 floors, equivalent to Mount Everest, on Stairmasters in the quickest time.

The competition is raising money for Beaumond House Hospice Care's Moving Mountains fundraising challenge, supporting its Hospice at Home team.

Jo Sage, active lifestyle officer at Active 4 Today, said: "We wanted to support Beaumond House and with it being the moving mountains challenge we thought it would be good to get our members involved and get active."

The gym will be encouraging as many members as possible to take part in the challenge next Thursday (March 23) and to climb as many floors as they can manage — in an effort to be faster than The Gym Group.

"We're up for a challenge," Jo added.

The Gym Group will be taking on the challenge on Tuesday (March 21), with a fundraising target of £1,000 set on the gym's Justgiving page, https://buff.ly/3FpjAQX.

Manager, Annie Featherstone, said: “We saw this as an excellent opportunity to not only give back to our local community, but also to actively engage with our members through exercise. People are always trying to get their daily steps in, so why not raise funds for a good cause at the same time? Our personal trainers are all onboard and are hoping to see other local gyms sign up and compete in a little friendly competition to discover which gym can reach the virtual summit first.”

The gym will be inviting members to take part throughout the day, and using two Stairmasters hope to complete the challenge in ten to 12 hours.

Matt Colbourne, events and community fundriaser at Beaumond House, said: "We do appreciate the continued support of local businesses, both in this Moving Mountains challenge and other fundraisers.

"Having both gyms on board raising vital funds for the hospice is brilliant."
