The Balderton branch of the Royal Air Forces Association paid tribute to those who lost their lives.
THE lifetime of RAF Balderton was again commemorated on Saturday with a ceremony at the memorial that pays tribute to the aerodrome’s losses.
The Balderton branch of the Royal Air Forces Association led the service at the Lancaster Grange Care Home, which is on land that part of the airfield once occupied.
The branch was joined by other associations in parading to the memorial where wreaths were laid, including one on behalf of the US, whose airmen were stationed at RAF Balderton for some of the war.
Representatives from Balderton Parish Council and Fernwood Parish Council attended as the base was part of Balderton, but is now part of Fernwood.
Newark Air Cadets were also present and there was a flypast by a Hurricane from the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
RAF Balderton opened in 1941 and was used by the RAF, Royal Canadian Air Force and USAAF.
It was used primarily as a troop carrier transport airfield.
During its short operational life, over two hundred aircrew failed to return.
