Repeat thief jailed after repeatedly targeting Asda store on Lombard Street, Newark

A prolific thief targeted a store on six occasions to steal razor blades and an electric razor to sell on for cash.

Christopher Hall stole the items from the Asda in Lombard Street, Newark, between August 7 and 17. On each occasion he left without making payment after concealing the goods.

The 39-year-old, of Millgate, Newark, was arrested in the town on Sunday night (August 18) and was subsequently charged.

He pleaded guilty to six counts of theft and was jailed for 16 weeks when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on Tuesday (August 20). Hall must also pay £298 compensation.

Sergeant Gregory Saxelby, said: “Theft from shops is not a victimless crime. It has a huge impact on not only the targeted businesses which are trying to make an honest living, causing stress and financial loss, but also on the community as well.

“Newark is fantastic for hosting a wide range of independent and larger businesses, and as local officers we understand how important it is for the local community that we respond quickly and efficiently when we hear of businesses being targeted in this way.

“Hall’s repeated offending was very brazen so I’m pleased to see him receive a custodial sentence, which will hopefully serve as a warning to other potential thieves.

“We will continue to do all we can to ensure retailers and their staff are protected from offenders like Hall who feel they can target our shops and businesses.”
