Newark MP Robert Jenrick has been given a ministerial role in Prime Minister Theresa May's re-shuffle.

Mr Jenrick has been appointed the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, which is a junior ministerial post, ranked below the Chancellor, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, the Paymaster General and the Financial Secretary to the Treasury.

Responsibilities include enterprise and productivity such as small business taxation and support to the Chancellor of the Exchequer on economic reform.

Other responsibilities include competition and better regulation, plus environmental issues including taxation of transport and international climate change issues.

Mr Jenrick told the Advertiser: "I’m absolutely delighted to join the government as a Minister and honoured to have the opportunity to serve in such a central department as the Treasury.

"My role will include helping to deliver growth and productivity in the economy, investment in infrastructure, new technologies, economic support for the regions like us in the Midlands and the North and some taxes.

"It’s a big challenge and I will have a lot to learn, but I hope I can make a contribution and raise the issues I hear on the doorstep and in my surgeries in Newark, at the heart of government.

"My first duty will always be as Member of Parliament for Newark and to residents of the constituency.

"I don’t expect this new role will impact my work locally and perhaps will give me deeper experience and greater influence.

"It was very exciting to be called to No 10 to see the PM. She was sat at the Cabinet table, offered me the job and explained the role to me.

"I was pleased that the reshuffle brought a lot of new, younger people into government including many more women and hope that together, our generation, can bring renewed drive and fresh ideas."
