Year five children help Rotary Club of Newark Castle and UK Waste Solutions build new green house at Lovers' Lane Primary and Nursery School
Children from Lovers' Lane Primary and Nursery School worked with local companies to help re-build their school green house.
Karlina Matroze, 9 and Joseph Smith, 9 spent their afternoon building a plastic bottle based green house out of 1300 bottles.
The two year five who took part in the construction of the green house belong to the school's eco committee and take the lead on environmental projects.
Year five teacher, Mrs Potter, said: "The children have brought in over 1300 bottles over the last six months to help rebuild the green house.
"It has been a continuous effort from everybody.
"The original green house was built almost eight years ago and was in need of repair.
"We got in touch with the Rotary Club of Newark Castle and UK Waste Solutions (UKWSL) and they both agreed to help with our refurbishment.
"The children were really enthusiastic towards the project and said they enjoyed the process of it."
The green house made of plastic bottles will allow temperatures to rise by ten degrees C, even through the cold wintry conditions.
Additionally, the gaps in the bottles will allow rain water to drip through and act as a self-watering system for the growing flowers and vegetables.
Mrs Potter highlighted the benefit of having a new and improved green house, she said: "We have ten members in the gardening club and they can now grow tomatoes and do things they could not do before."
Local waste management company, UKWSL were the partner company providing the muscle on the day.
Cathy Cook, people director at the company, said: "We were delighted to work with our partner school Lovers Lane Primary and Newark Castle Rotary to build an Eco Greenhouse as part of our on-going commitment to work with the local community.
"As a waste management broker this is a perfect opportunity for us to help educate the next generation on the importance of creating a sustainable environment. Hopefully we will be able to sample some of the produce grown by the children’s gardening club."
