A football club starts its season this afternoon in a new league thanks to its revamped ground.

Work began at Whatton United FC three months ago after it was accepted into the Central Midlands League, on condition ground improvements were made.

Manager Mr Simon Daws said: “I used to play an the ground 30 years ago. It has probably not been touched for 20 years and has been in a bit of a dilapidated state for some time.”

The work was carried out mainly by Mr Daws, club chairman Mr Martin Hallam, and secretary Mr Simon Brothwell.

New posts and railings have been installed, along with a tea room, and carpark with a path leading to the newly-built stands.

Mr Daws said: “We had to give the home and away sides separate showers and toilets and the pavilion needed some love and attention with a new roof to prevent water damage.

“We have done most of the work ourselves including the drainage and the plumbing. Some of our players helped as well and so there has been a lot of effort put into this project.

“I would like to thank Orston Parish Council for making it possible.”

The self-funded improvements will also benefit Aslockton Cranmers Youth Football Club, which uses the ground.

Mr Daws said the two clubs had formed an alliance because the under-16s needed older players to look up to and Whatton needed young players.

The club hopes the improvements will attract more support for the team.

Whatton’s opening game in the Central Midlands League is against Bentley Colliery tomorrow, the first time the two clubs have met.

Kick-off is at 3pm at the Spa Lane ground.

Mr Brothwell said it had been a lot of hard work but when the final whistle blew, he would be happy.
