Schoolchildren had a taste of what’s to come this summer at Newark’s National Civil War Centre, Appletongate.

They took part in a range of activities linked to the centre’s Summer Of Spies theme.

The launch event, introduced by the leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, Mr David Lloyd, included a performance by a civil war spy.

Other spy-related activities included making code-breaking devices and periscopes that can see around corners.

The youngsters were encouraged to write a secret message for their parents to try to decipher, and could dress in disguises and make masks.

A Summer Of Spies starts a week on Saturday and runs until September 2.

The programme includes performances, family craft activities, and the chance to make spying aids.
