A community sport weekend was held in Newark Market Place.

Sport clubs and associations including tennis and archery were represented as part of the event, on Saturday, organised by Newark Sports Association (NSA) following help from Newark Town Council.

Mr Tony Colton, chairman of the NSA, said: “Very often local sports and clubs operate unseen and the only people that see them are their members.

“This was an opportunity to spread our sporting new wider and to try to find new participants.

“We would like to make this a regular fixture in the sports calendar and a bigger and better event.”

Mandie Elson, from Newark Castle Archers, said: “It was a great opportunity to let residents see that there is another sports club available to them within the Newark area.”

Anyone who would like to find out more about the archery club can visit the website newarkcastlearchers@live.com or its Facebook page.

Mr Andy Cole, chairman of Newark Tennis Club, said: “Tennis is very accessible, and you only have to put a net up and people intuitively know what to do and how the game works. It’s great to see young people who have never played the sport pick up a racket for the first-time start playing.”

Sarah Robinson, of Newark Town FC, said: “We can turn people on to sport for life and that’s the important thing.”
