Brand new section of the Scouts, Squirrels, is coming to Newark

For the first time in 35 years, a brand new section of the Scouts is coming to Newark, writes Sarah Cure.

Launched in 2021, Squirrels is designed to help children aged from four to six get out into the great outdoors as well as learning by doing through storytelling, routine and play.

The first official Squirrels Drey in the Newark District will open up for budding young explorers this September at 7th Newark Scouts, Lovers Lane, with more to come around the town and in local villages.

To mark the start of a new branch in the Scouting family tree, a free open event will be held for budding new Squirrels and their families at Lovers Lane Scout Hut on Saturday, September 16, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Lou Ousley, growth and recruitment officer with The Scouts, said: “This is a really exciting time for Newark Scouts. Not only does this mean that 7th Newark Scouts can now be open to young people aged from to four to 14 years old, but it also creates more brilliant opportunities for adult volunteers to get involved with Scouting in their local community.”
