Steampunkers add fun and flair to Newark's weekend

A steampunk torch-lit procession brought to an end a weekend of festive fun centred on Newark Market Place.

Saturday's offering was a hugely-popular Christmas market with 116 stalls.

Then on Sunday there was a Steampunk and Dickensian Christmas Market, also featuring Morris dancers, musicians and street entertainers.

The torch-lit parade by the steampunkers in their fantastic costumes happened at 6pm on a foggy and cold night.

The procession began on Kirkgate and around the Market Place as an appreciative crowd looked on and filmed.

The Steampunk and Dickensian Christmas Market featured 119 stalls.

Newark Town Council's markets manager, Ian Harrison said: "It was a fantastic weekend.

"We're so grateful to all of the stallholders, the steampunkers and indeed everyone who braved the cold to come out and participate.

"On the Saturday, many of the traders sold out of their wares, some by noon.

"Sunday's procession, which was led by pipers, was a sight to behold and those that had stayed out to watch despite the plummeting temperatures were treated to something spectacular.

"There's been a lot happening in Newark in the run-up to Christmas and every one has been a visible success."

And the festivities are not over yet as a Christmas craft and gift market comes to town on Sunday.
